How does this program work?

The Iowa Students First Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) provides state funding to support K-12 students in Iowa. The program provides funds to cover tuition, fees, and other qualified education expenses at accredited nonpublic schools in Iowa. As a result, the program allows families to meet their child’s individual educational needs.

Award amounts for 2025-2026

Funding Type:

The amount for each eligible student will be published by the state for each school year. To see the most current amount, visit the Program Overview. Families must use these funds first for tuition and fees before covering other approved educational expenses or carrying over balances for subsequent school years.

Once approved, the Iowa Students First ESAs will be managed within the Odyssey site.

Half of the funds will be available for use in the Fall semester and the remaining half will be available for use in the Spring semester.

Any Iowa resident K-12 student attending an accredited nonpublic school, including those who previously attended an accredited nonpublic school, is eligible for the Iowa Students First Education Savings Accounts (ESAs).

  6. Program Confirmation: Await communication regarding your application status and grant award decision. The ability to select the school your child plans to attend will be available in the Odyssey portal immediately after an application is approved.
