Charter Schools in Alabama

Alabama charter schools offer students innovative educational approaches and curricula, and increased flexibility in teaching methods. Charter schools are tuition-free and open to all students through lottery-based enrollment.

Educational Autonomy: Charter schools operate with greater flexibility in curriculum design, staffing decisions, teaching methods, and daily operations. Schools can innovate with programs such as classical education, Montessori approaches, STEM-focused curricula, or career-technical pathways.

Performance Accountability: In exchange for autonomy, charter schools face stricter accountability measures than traditional public schools. Charter schools operate under five-year performance contracts with an authorizer (either the Alabama Public Charter School Commission or a local school board). Schools can be closed or have their charter revoked for failing to meet academic and operational targets.

Enrollment Model: Charter schools use lottery-based enrollment when applications exceed capacity. Students residing within the local school system where the charter is authorized, previously enrolled students and their siblings, and children of founders, board members, and full-time employees (up to 10% of total enrollment) are given enrollment preference. All Alabama residents are eligible to apply.

Tuition and Fees: Charter schools are tuition-free public schools. Like traditional public schools, charter schools cannot charge tuition. State and local per-student monetary allocations based on where students reside fund the charter schools.

Current Status: As of the 2024-25 school year, Alabama has 17 public charter schools serving over 8,000 students, with approximately 2,000 additional students on waitlists. Charter schools have grown 376% in enrollment between 2019-20 and 2023-24.
