Alaska Charter Schools
Alaska charter schools are public schools that operate with greater independence from traditional district regulations. They’re completely tuition-free and open to all Alaska students.
What makes them different: Charter schools have flexibility to create specialized learning environments—think language immersion, STEM-focused curricula, Montessori methods, or project-based learning. They control their own budgets and teaching approaches while remaining accountable to the state.
How enrollment works: Applications typically open in early winter (January/February), with lottery drawings held in spring if more families apply than there are seats available. Unlike neighborhood schools, you’re not automatically enrolled based on where you live.
The bottom line: Charter schools offer innovation and choice within the public system, at no cost to families.
