California Inter-District Public School Choice
How California Inter-district Transfers Work: Families can request transfers to public schools in different districts. Some districts designate themselves as “Districts of Choice” and actively welcome transfer students from other areas, subject to available space.
Key Benefits:
- Access to schools with specialized programs, better ratings, or preferred locations
- No need to move your residence to attend a different district’s schools
- You do not need your home district’s permission to transfer into a District of Choice
Application Timing: Transfer requests often must be filed between December and February for the following school year. Specific deadlines vary by receiving district.
Important Considerations:
- Receiving districts have discretion over accepting transfer students based on capacity
- Transportation is typically the family’s responsibility
- Transfer status may be revoked for disciplinary or attendance issues
- Some districts give priority to transfers for specific reasons (childcare, parent employment location)
Cost: Free. California inter-district transfers do not involve tuition or fees for public schools.
