Homeschooling in Kansas
Homeschooling is legal in Kansas when structured as a non-accredited private school.
Legal Status: Homeschooling is fully legal in Kansas and treated as a non-accredited private school option.
Registration Requirements:
- Register your homeschool with the Kansas State Department of Education (once, for the first year)
- Registration timing: Required only once upon first enrollment
- The process is straightforward and can be completed online
Instructional Requirements:
- Provide a “competent” instructor (no formal teaching credentials required)
- Deliver at least 1,116 instructional hours per year (186 days × 6 hours/day) for grades 1–11
- Include instruction in required subjects: reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies
Age Requirement: Children ages 7–18 must be regularly enrolled and attending a school (public, charter, private, or homeschool).
Flexibility: Homeschools are not required to follow the public school calendar or daily schedule, allowing families to customize their approach while meeting state hour requirements.
State Funding:
- No direct funding available. Kansas does not provide direct funding for homeschooling through school choice programs
- Homeschooling families bear the cost of curriculum, materials, and instruction
- Private tutoring or educational services purchased by the family may be available through other means (such as the federal tax credit for SGOs, effective 2027, if family income qualifies)
Important Note: Unlike some states that provide ESAs or vouchers for homeschoolers, Kansas offers no state financial support for homeschool expenses. Families must fund all curriculum, materials, and educational resources independently.
