Nevada Charter Schools

Nevada law authorizes public charter schools statewide. Charter schools are public schools that operate under performance contracts (“charters”) providing flexibility in staffing, curriculum, and school design in exchange for accountability to authorizers for academic and operational results.

Program Type: Free public schools with operational flexibility

Tuition: $0 – Completely FREE. Nevada charter schools are public schools and may NOT charge tuition or mandatory enrollment fees.

Authorization: Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 388A authorizes charter schools statewide

Oversight and Sponsorship:

  • Nevada State Public Charter School Authority (SPCSA) – Primary authorizer
  • Certain school districts can also authorize charter schools
  • Authorizers provide oversight and accountability

Funding:

  • Funded with public dollars (per-pupil funding)
  • Per-pupil public funding typically in the $9,000-$10,000 range
  • Same public funding model as traditional public schools

How Charter Schools Differ from Traditional Public Schools:

Flexibility and Autonomy:

  • Governed by performance contracts (“charters”) providing greater flexibility in:
    • Staffing and hiring decisions
    • Curriculum design and instructional approaches
    • School design and organizational structure
    • Budget and resource allocation
  • Can provide alternative educational models
  • Often with specialized curricula or instructional approaches

Accountability:

  • Held accountable to authorizers for academic and operational results
  • Must meet performance standards in charter contract
  • Can lose charter and be closed if performance standards not met
  • Regular reviews and renewal process

Regulations:

  • Operated by independent governing boards (not directly by school districts)
  • Must still follow key state and federal requirements:
    • Non-discrimination laws
    • Serving students with disabilities (IEPs)
    • Health and safety standards
    • Nonsectarian admissions and programs

Enrollment Model:

Admission Process:

  • When applications exceed available seats, charter schools typically admit students through a random public lottery
  • Certain state-allowed priority categories may apply:
    • Siblings of currently enrolled students
    • Students in at-risk categories
    • Other priorities as allowed by state law
  • Students not selected in lottery are placed on waitlists
  • Waitlists are common at high-demand schools

Application Timing:

  • Many Nevada charter schools accept applications several months before the start of the school year
  • Lotteries often held in late winter or early spring when applications exceed capacity
  • Families may receive offers throughout spring and summer as seats open
  • Monitor email and portals during this period for waitlist movement

Cost to Families:

  • No tuition charged – charter schools are free public schools
  • Families may encounter optional activity or supply costs similar to those in traditional public schools
  • Field trips, uniforms, supplies may have costs

Who Can Attend:

  • Charter schools in Nevada are open to all students
  • No special entrance requirements
  • Admission through lottery if demand exceeds capacity
  • Must serve students with disabilities (IEPs)
