Charter Schools Arizona

Arizona allows the establishment of publicly funded charter schools that operate independently of traditional public school systems. These schools offer innovative educational approaches and increased flexibility in curriculum and administration.

Arizona’s Charter School Landscape: Arizona has one of the highest charter school enrollment rates in the nation, offering families diverse educational options.

Key Differences: Charter schools are independently operated public schools with more autonomy over curriculum and focus (e.g., STEM, Arts, Classical education) than traditional district schools, but they are held to the same academic and financial accountability standards.

Enrollment Model: Open enrollment – you can apply to any charter school regardless of your zip code, provided there is space. If applications exceed capacity, schools must use a transparent lottery system to fill seats.

Tuition and Fees: $0. Charter schools are public schools and cannot charge tuition. They may charge reasonable fees for extracurriculars (athletics, clubs), but these cannot be a barrier to enrollment.

Application Timing: Open enrollment typically begins in late Fall (November/December) for the following school year. Popular schools fill quickly; if you miss the window, you are placed on a waitlist.
