Summary

The DC Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP) provides scholarships to eligible students in the District of Columbia which allows them to attend participating private elementary or secondary schools of their choice in the District. Administered by the U.S. Department of Education, this program aims to offer expanded educational options to low-income parents residing in the District.

Student Funding

Funding Type: Voucher

The DC Opportunity Scholarship Program determines voucher amounts each year. Based on current funding, vouchers are (but may be subject to change):

  • Grades K-8 Funding Amount: Up to approximately $8,000
  • Grades 9-12 Funding Amount: Up to approximately $12,000

Student Eligibility

Students from households that are either recipients of SNAP benefits (food stamps), or, meet income guidelines: at or below 185% of the income threshold for first time applicants, or 300% of the income threshold for renewing families.

Rules & Requirements

  • Income Level: Recipients of SNAP benefits (food stamps) or Incomes not exceeding 185 percent of the federal poverty line (FPL) or 300% of the income threshold for renewing families.
  • Residency: Applicants must be current residents of the District of Columbia.
  • Educational Status: Be 5 years old or older by September 30th to enter Kindergarten through 12th grade for the upcoming school year
  • School Requirements: Funds can be used at eligible private schools participating in the program.

Using Your Funds

Families can use the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program funds to cover tuition, some fees, and public transportation expenses for their children attending participating private elementary or secondary schools in the District of Columbia. Scholarship checks are sent to you via the student’s school 2-3 times per school year.

How to Apply

  1. Check Eligibility: Ensure your child meets the income and residency requirements.
  2. Gather Documentation: Collect required documents as outlined on the Checklist provided by the program, including proof of income and residency.
  3. Choose an Eligible School: Select a private school that participates in the program on the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program site.
  4. Complete the Application: Follow the application process on the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program site during the open enrollment period.
  5. Submit: Review and submit the application along with any necessary documentation.
