Homeschooling in DC

DC families can homeschool their children with relatively minimal regulatory requirements, which include:

Legal Requirements for Homeschooling in DC:

• File a Notice of Intent to homeschool with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE)
• Provide instruction in at least the following subjects: reading, grammar, writing, social studies, mathematics, and science
• Maintain a portfolio of work demonstrating educational progress
• No mandatory standardized testing requirements (though families may choose to administer assessments)

Costs: Families bear all expenses for curriculum materials and educational resources. Unlike some states, DC does not currently offer ESAs or funding to support homeschool expenses.

Flexibility: Homeschool families have complete control over curriculum, schedule, pacing, and teaching methods.
