Idaho Educational Charities Tax Credit Donations

Idaho allows businesses and individuals to receive tax credits for donations to approved educational and charitable organizations, including those that fund K-12 scholarships. These donations effectively create scholarships for private school students.

Program Type: Tax Credit for Donations to Educational Charities

How It Works:

  1. Businesses and individuals donate to qualified educational organizations (such as private school foundations and scholarship organizations)
  2. Donors receive a 50% tax credit on their Idaho state income tax return
  3. These organizations award scholarships to families, which are then used for tuition and education expenses

Tax Credit Amounts:

Donor Type Credit Amount Annual Cap
Individuals 50% of donation $500 per person
Married couples filing jointly 50% of donation $1,000 per couple
C and S corporations 50% of donation $5,000 per corporation

How Families Access These Scholarships: Families should contact private school foundations and scholarship organizations to inquire about scholarship availability. These organizations award scholarships based on their own criteria (often financial need-based).

Administration: The Idaho State Tax Commission oversees and approves eligible educational organizations. Donors can deduct the donation and claim the tax credit on their state income tax return.

Federal Tax Credit Scholarship (Future): Idaho does not currently participate in the federal-level scholarship granting organization (SGO) program under the 2024 federal tax credit. State policymakers are monitoring federal program development and may opt in at a future date.
