Massachusetts Public Virtual Schools
Massachusetts operates two virtual schools offering full-time online education for grades K-12. These are public schools with no tuition. Classes are taught by licensed teachers, and students must meet the same academic standards as in-person public schools.
Program Type: Free public online schools
Schools:
- TEC Connections Academy (TECCA) – Grades K-12
- Greater Commonwealth Virtual School (GCVS) – Grades K-12
Who It Serves: All Massachusetts residents; currently capacity-capped at approximately 2% of statewide public school enrollment to protect district budgets
Tuition: $0 – Completely FREE. No tuition or fees.
How Massachusetts Public Virtual Schools Work:
- Families apply directly to the virtual school
- If capacity allows, enrollment is rolling
- If a school reaches capacity, a lottery is used
- Students must formally withdraw from their home district school
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a Massachusetts resident
- Must provide proof of residency
- Cannot be simultaneously enrolled in another public school
- Age limits apply (must complete program before turning 21 for general education, 22 for special education)
Learning Model:
- Online instruction with offline independent work
- Licensed teachers provide live and recorded lessons
- Students log in daily for classes and assignments
- Parental support required: Virtual schools are not designed for independent learners without parental facilitation
- Same academic standards and accountability as in-person public schools
Application Timeline: Enrollment is rolling throughout the year, subject to capacity. Contact schools directly for current enrollment timelines and capacity status.
Important Considerations Massachusetts Public Virtual Schools:
- Virtual learning requires significant parental involvement and home supervision
- Students must have reliable internet access and appropriate technology
- Not ideal for students who need extensive in-person support or socialization
- Capacity is limited; schools may have waitlists
Special Education: Virtual schools must provide IEP services for students with disabilities. However, families should carefully evaluate whether virtual learning is appropriate for their child’s specific needs.
