Summary

The Ohio K-12 Home Education Tax Credit allows families who homeschool their children to claim a  nonrefundable tax credit of up to $250 per year. The credit specifically supports homeschooling families.

Tax Credit Amount: $250 per household

The nonrefundable credit equals the lesser of $250 or the amount you paid for educational expenses for all homeschooled dependents. The credit can only offset a family’s state tax liability and cannot exceed the amount owed in state income taxes for that year.

Student Eligibility

Only students who have been excused by an Ohio school district superintendent for formal homeschooling qualify for this credit. There are no additional eligibility criteria based on income level, academic performance, or other factors to use the Ohio K-12 Home Education Tax Credit.

Rules & Requirements

  • Residency: Applicants must be residents of Ohio and also file a state income tax return.
  • Educational Status: Students in K-12 grades.
  • School Requirements: The student is homeschooled during the year in which the state tax return is filed.

Using Your Funds

The Ohio K-12 Home Education Tax Credit covers the expenses for the following items used in homeschool instruction:

  • Books and subscriptions
  • School supplies and supplementary materials
  • Computer software and applications

The tax credit does not cover expenses or fees for computers, or similar electronic devices or accessories.

  1. Check Eligibility: Ensure your child has been excused from compulsory attendance laws for the purpose of receiving home instruction in the state of Ohio.
  2. Gather Documentation:  Keep track of expenses paid, along with receipts.
