Summary

The Ohio K-12 Nonchartered Nonpublic School Tax Credit allows families to claim a tax credit for tuition paid to send their children to non-chartered private schools in the state. This program aims to provide financial assistance and increase educational options for families choosing private school education.

Nonchartered Nonpublic (NCNP) schools are schools that, because of truly held religious beliefs, choose to not be chartered by the state. But, each NCNP school must certify annually in a report to parents that the school meets the Ohio Operating Standards.

Student Funding

Funding Type: Tax Credit

Maximum tax credit amounts per tax return:

  • For families with an annual household income below $50,000: $1,000
  • For families with an annual household income of $50,000 or above: $1,500

The tax credit equals the lesser of the total tuition paid for all students attending the nonchartered private school. The tax credit is non-refundable. This means the credit can only offset a family’s state tax liability and cannot result in a tax refund.
