How does this program work?

Under the Vermont Public High School Choice Program, Vermont students can apply to alternative public high schools through an annual application process, with lotteries used to allocate limited spots based on each school’s capacity limits.

How much funding can families receive?

Funding Type: None

The Vermont Public High School Choice Program provides no funding for tuition or other charges, unless schools agree otherwise. The program also provides no funding for transportation.

Who is eligible for this program?

Students in good standing in Vermont public schools grades 8-11 can apply to attend any other public high school in Vermont for grades 9-12, instead of their assigned school based on residence.

Once enrolled through public high school choice, the student can stay at that school until graduation unless they move out of state, face expulsion, or choose to return to their home high school by July 15 of the intended return year.

What can families use the funds for?

No funds are provided under this program.

What are the program rules and requirements?

  • Residency: Applicants must be residents of Vermont.
  • Educational Status: Students in grades 8-11.
  • School Requirements: Students may apply to an alternative Vermont public high school under this program.
  • Capacity Limits: Each high school sets capacity limits on how many students they can accept through school choice each year. These decisions are based on factors like program capacity, class size, and building capacity. Also, sending schools may limit the number of students transferring out to a maximum of 10% of the student population or 40 students, whichever is less.

How do families apply?

  1. Complete the Application: Applications are available at the student’s current school and must be submitted by March 1st each year, listing their first, second, and third choice schools. For more information, refer to the Public High School Choice Frequently Asked Questions.
